시작하는 글

영겁의 시간은 선택할 수 없지만, 공간은 선택할 수 있다.

인도인들은 종종 이렇게 말하곤 한다.
“인간은 영겁의 시간 속에서 자신이 태어나고 살아갈 시점을 선택할 수는 없다. 그러나 살아 있는 동안 어떤 공간에서 살 것인지는 선택할 수 있다.”

참으로 인도적인, 철학적 화두가 아닐 수 없다.

당신은 어떤 시간에 태어나, 어떤 시대를 살아왔는가?
대한민국의 출산율이 최고조에 달했던 1958년, 개띠 해에 태어났는가?
나라가 어렵게 성장해가던 시기에 석유파동을 맞아, 고된 시간을 보냈는가?
고도성장과 민주화를 거치며 이제 좀 살 만해졌다고 생각한 순간, IMF 외환위기를 겪으며 다시 한번 인생의 굴곡을 마주했는가?

그렇다면, 그 시간 동안 당신은 어디에 있었는가?

한국에 있었는가?
해외에 있었는가?
일을 위해, 먹고살기 위해 있었는가?
아니면, 오롯이 즐기기 위해 그곳에 있었는가?
혹은, 지금 이 순간처럼 삶을 되돌아보며 새로운 삶을 꿈꾸는 공간에 있었는가?

태국 파타야에는 정말 많은 인도인들이 살고 있다. 매일같이 마주치고 대화를 나누는 이들이지만, 그들의 사고방식은 때때로 이해하기 어렵고, 또 한편으로는 무척 특별하다고 느껴질 때가 있다.

하지만 적어도, 위에서 언급한 말만큼은 인정하지 않을 수 없다.
그들에게는, 공간에 대한 깊은 통찰과 삶에 대한 혜안이 분명히 담겨 있다.

We cannot choose the eternity of time we’re born into, but we can choose the space in which we live.

There’s an old saying often heard among Indians:
“Humans cannot choose the moment in eternity when they are born and live, but they can choose the space in which they spend their lives.”

Isn’t that a profoundly Indian—and deeply philosophical—reflection?

So, in what time were you born?
And what era have you lived through?

Were you born in 1958, the Year of the Dog, when South Korea had its highest birthrate?
Did you live through the economic struggles of the oil crisis as the nation tried to grow?
Did you endure the ups and downs of rapid development and democratization—only to be hit once again by the shock of the IMF financial crisis, just when life seemed to be getting better?

And during all those times—where were you?

Were you in Korea?
Were you abroad?
Were you there to work and survive?
Or were you somewhere simply to enjoy life?
Were you in a place that allowed you to reflect on your life—and envision a new one?

In Pattaya, Thailand, there is a remarkably large Indian community. I see them daily. Sometimes, their way of thinking feels difficult to grasp; other times, it feels fascinatingly unique.

Yet when it comes to that simple but powerful idea about time and space, I cannot help but acknowledge the depth of their insight and perspective.
